Zodiac Collection
Originating in Ancient Babylon approximately 500 BC, the Babylonians divided the ecliptic tracking they kept of the sun, moon and planets into 12 distinct sectors. A constellation was assigned to each sector based on their lunar calendar. When the Egyptians further enhanced the Babylonian zodiac calendar with their own mathematical measurements of time, the practice of mapping a person's hour of birth in relation to their sign began to emerge. As the Hellenistic world adopted Egyptian practices and customs, they further contributed to the zodiac adding mythology and even the name 'zodiac,' which derives from the Greek word Zōidiakòs. Modern Western astrology relies on the Ptolemaic mapping calendar system for the zodiac, while this has shifted due to the earths wobble and constellations moving eastward over time, it remains the basis for our current zodiac calendar.
